Ayurveda Sunshine Coast- Ayurveda is an ancient, holistic system of medicine originating in India, thousands of years ago. It is a complete way of life for many people.
The word ‘Ayurveda’ means ‘Knowledge of Life’. It is a practice that provides guidance for maintaining health, or improving health where necessary. Ayurveda is a system that uses the inherent principles of nature to bring the individual back into balance. It is a practice that considers the mind, the body, the senses and the soul. Its preventative health care encompasses Herbal Medicine, changes in diet, meditation, massage and Yoga. According to Ayurveda each person is made up of the five primary elements of nature- air, fire, water, ether (space) and earth. These elements combine to form what is known as the 3 Doshas or Metabolic Body Types. These are:
Vata dosha- is a combination of the ether and air elements. It is seen as the force which directs nerve impulses, circulation, respiration, and elimination as it governs the principle of movement.
Pitta dosha- is the combination of the fire and water elements. This dosha is responsible for the process of transforming food into nutrients (metabolism). It is responsible for metabolism in the organ and tissue systems as well as cellular metabolism.
Kapha dosha- is the combination of the water and earth elements. This dosha is responsible for growth and protection. An example of this is the Cerebral-spinal fluid that protects the brain and spinal column.
We all have different proportions of these three doshas making up our constitution and because of this, Ayurveda sees each person as a unique individual. This also offers explanation as to why one treatment will not have the same result for every person. When one or more of the doshas become predominant, imbalance of the body and mind may occur. Ayurveda will suggest nutritional and lifestyle changes to bring the individual back into balance. A detoxifying cleansing process may also be suggested.
A consultation with an Ayurveda practitioner will determine your doshic profile. From here the practitioner will prescribe a variety of Ayurvedic treatments depending on the individual.
